I had myself evaluated, because I was unable to work in my profession. The test did not turn up particularly positive results. I was classified as a perfectionist. A Carinthian who had trained as a car painter in Austria was hired and fired within a week. He could not understand why; after all, his work was substantially better than that of his colleagues. He simply couldn’t see how to get his feet on the ground. One day he ran into a former co-worker and lamented his misfortune. The co-worker laughed and said: “While you were painting 2 cars, I was doing 3! Good grief, the boss’s cash register has to keep ringing!” His next job turned into a permanent one! So, I was perfect and simply had bad prospects.

What a coincidence! A private rescue company showed interest in me and took me on, with the following conditions: “You start tomorrow at 8 o’clock with no beard and with a license for rescue vehicles.” My God, I had a job where perfect people were needed.

The driver’s license office is open all day, since Americans have to take an exam every three years, with the option to choose the date. I immediately got the paperwork, got in my passenger car and ‘studied’ for the test. I went to the exam and passed. In the evening, I shaved my beard, which caused my sweetheart to tear up. After all, she had only ever known me with a beard. The next day, I reported for duty at 8 o’clock sharp. It had not yet been two weeks. My father gave me the necessary support and confidence. Could I still have any objections and doubts? When I left for home three years later, I received probably the rarest job reference you can get. It promised that I would be taken back at any time, should I wish to do so.
