We just wore leather jackets. Not for the group. One person wore one. And then we all liked them so it ended up we were all on stage with them. And we’d always worn jeans because we didn’t have anything else at the time. And then we went back to Liverpool and got quite a few bookings. They all thought we were German. We were billed as ‘From Hamburg’ and they all said, ‘You speak good English’. So we went back to Germany and we had a bit more money the second time, so we wore leather pants and we looked like four Gene Vincents, only a bit younger, I think. And that was it, you know. We just kept the leather gear till Brian (Epstein) came along.

‚How long are you gonna last?‘, well, you can’t say. You can be big-headed and say: ‚Yeah, we’re gonna last ten years‘. But as soon as you’ve said that you think: ‚We’re lucky if we last three months‘.

I haven’t got the patience to practice to become a ‘perfect’ guitarist. I’m more interested in the combination of my voice and the guitar I know, and to write songs, than I am in the instrument. So I never go through a day hardly without playing it whether I’m performing or not.

Im November 1963 erscheint das zweite Album „With The Beatles“ . Die beiden folgenden Songs, die John Lennon federführend schrieb, eröffnen die A-Seite der Schallplatte:

Every night when everybody has fun, here am I sitting all on my own.

It Won’t Be Long, 1963

Whenever you want me at all, I’ll be here, yes, I will. Whenever you call, you just gotta call on me.

All I’ve Got to Do, 1963

Und nur ein Jahr später singt John in „Any Time At All“ (erschienen auf dem dritten Studioalbum der Beatles „A Hard Day’s Night“ im Juni 1964):

If you need somebody to love just look into my eyes: I’ll be there to make you feel right. If you’re feeling sorry and sad I’d really sympathize. Don’t you be sad, just call me tonight. Any time at all, all you gotta do is call and I’ll be there.

Unwillkürlich denkt man bei diesen Sätzen aus „All I’ve Got to Do“ und „Any Time At All“ an den Welthit von Carole King „You’ve Got A Friend“. Carole King singt 1971: „When you’re down and troubled and you need some love and care … You just call out my name and you know, wherever I am, I’ll come running … All you have to do is call and I’ll be there “. Der Schlusssatz Caroles ist nahezu identisch mit dem Johns in „Any Time At All“.

Der Ruf – Call – als Leitthema bei John:

I call your name, but you’re not there. Was I to blame for beeing unfair?

I Call Your Name, 1958/1963 (Der Song wurde schon vor der Gründung der Beatles von John 1958 geschrieben und erscheint zunächst in der Version der Band aus Liverpool The Dakotas, die auch bei EMI unter Vertrag sind und von George Martin produziert werden. John ist mit dieser Version unzufrieden. In der Fassung der Beatles erscheint der Song in den USA im April 1964 auf dem dortigen zweiten Album und in Großbritannien im Juni 1964 auf der EP „Long Tall Sally“.)

It’s nice you know, because these foreign records, this kind of, you know, the language: It just didn’t go. It’s quite nice actually, but if it was in English it’d mean even less.

John Lennon zeigt seine Scharfzüngigkeit und beweist seine Geschmackssicherheit im Juni 1963 bei der BBC-Sendung „Juke Box Jury“, indem er sich über das Lied „The Click Song“ von Miriam Makeba and the Belafonte Singers lustig macht. Weitere Urteile:

I like pianos and things, but not sort of pub pianos playing flamenco music, with ‘click click.’ It doesn’t work, you know. It still sounds... It still sounds honky, you know. It doesn’t sound anything like flamenco, (John Lennon über Ross Conways, „Flamenco“).

Well, you know, I used to go mad on Elvis, like all the groups, but not now. I don’t like this. And I hate songs with ‘walk’ and ‘talk’ in it, you know, those lyrics. She walks, she talks. I don’t like that. And I don’t like the double beat: doom-cha doom-cha, that bit. It’s awful: Poor old Elvis, (John Lennon über Elvis Presleys „(You’re the) Devil in Disguise“. 4. November 1963 während der Royal Variety Performance in Anwesenheit von Queen Elizabeth. Vor dem Auftritt hatte John hinter der Bühne seinem Manager Brian Epstein angekündigt, er werde es dem erlauchten Publikum deutlich sagen: „rattle your fuckin’ jewelry“. Brian war danach sehr erleichtert, dass John das F-Wort nicht benutzte.

Not a Second Time (Der Song erscheint auf dem zweiten Studioalbum „With The Beatles“ im November 1963)

I had a vision when I was twelve. And I saw a man on a flaming pie, and he said, „You are Beatles with an A“. And we are. … That’s how it started, anyway.

I suppose, a couple of people have jumped on the railway carriage. I mean, the bandwagon. But it doesn’t really matter, you know, because it’s flattery and it promotes the whole idea of us if we’re away, and there’s a few little Beatles still going to remind people of us.

Yeah. Well, that was sort of the main catch phrase from ‘She Loves You’. But we stuck that on. We’d written the song nearly, and we suddenly needed more, so we had ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah’. And it caught on, you know. They use it for if you’re gonna be ‘with it’ or ‚hip’. … Yeah, we’ll have to write another song with it.

Während der hektischen und lauten Pressekonferenz am 7. Februar 1964 am John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City werden die vier Pilzköpfe gebeten, etwas zu singen, verneinen aber. Auf die Nachfrage, es gebe Zweifel, ob sie überhaupt singen könnten, sagte John den Satz.

Well, we’ve been out to a couple of clubs. Rock clubs, mainly. Because we just like listening to rock when we’re not working, anyway. And we’re hoping some of our favorite artists will come up, but you know, they’re all out on the road or something. They’re not here. … There’s a lot, you know: Marvin Gaye, Miracles, Mary Wells.
