1 1 THE AIR THAT CARRIES A Mystic ShortStory from the California Shore Maris Bernard (USA , California, Seaside / Pacific Ocean, . 2024 , Friday, July 9, 4:30 pm) “Hey, Mister, … what are you doing there ? It´s not really safe ... .” Siyna has walked up to her favorite place on the shore by the pacific coast between Monterey and Point Sur . The slim man is standing right on the edge. One step further or an unexpected rush of wind and he would fall down at least 80 Meters into the sea, break all his bones and drown. “It is safe enough . “ He would not be the first one to jump off at this spot. Maybe another one now. But he doesn´t give an impression of run down or desperate. Seems in a good shape as far as Siyna can see from nearly ten meters distance . Slim, well dressed, not expensive but of good taste and a bit unconventional. "You don´t intend to ... ." " And if,... ? Have a nice day, madam." Siyna, stunned, still looking at him as he has turned his face to the horizon again. “I am not the one to get such people out of their trouble,” she thinks to herself . “I am not in trouble .” " I didn’t say anything mister ! “ “ But you thought it, didn´t you ?... “Well,...Whatever... . “

2 2 She changes her direction and quickly heads on to the café nearby. Takes the wooden steps to the terace of the ´Ariel-Bistro´. Laureen, her longtime girlfriend since schooldays might already be attending her. “ It´s not my business at all “ she murmures as she looks for a seat and realizes that Laureen is already waiting at a table on the terace close to the ceiling. “ Damn Laureen, … down there on the shore around the there´s another crazy one going to kill himself. I just was talking to him, … maybe we should . . "Call someone ...? What for, Siyna ,… they take him for a day, check his papers, maybe they get him to a hospital ,... and two weeks later he is standing there again. . . . With noone coming round to see him and , - that´s it. Baby, it´s your free day,... let´s get a nice meal, … I´´m starving and I got two hours off, need to repose. ” “ You´re right, … yes,... you´re right .” The two women change their conversation to other themes while havin their drinks and meal. They are both sporty from schooldays on,… well trained, and beautiful in their late twentys. When Laureen leaves for a day´s last date with a mansion-owner who is intending to sell his house in San Jose, Siyna remains sitting ,chilling, admiring the beautiful late afternoon-sunlight over an iceblue ocean . The week had been hard work. Weekend. Finally. Her eyes get heavy and she nearly falls asleep for a moment, although she just had another coffee. When she raises her eyes she sees the man from the shore again coming up the stairs taking a seat two-three tables away from her, ordering a drink. He looks at her indifferently. She can´t help looking at him again. ´I wanted to forget about this ´-. Seeks for money in her bag to pay and get off.

3 3 As she heads to the stairs to her car at the parking she has to pass him again. He gives her a smile now and she cannot help smiling back. Josh will surely phone for the weekend.

4 4 On the following Friday, Siyna is again on her way to take the roundwalk, heading to the café on the shore again. Like usual, she passes the point where the man was standing the week before. Laureen calls on the phone that she can´t come because she has to prepare a business-journey and is off plan, … still the flight to book, get papers in the office , meet the boss. So Siyna sits alone on the terace. She goes to the service-room , and when she comes out her attention is drawn to new drawing on the wall oposite the door. Not big, but interesting to her,… just in black and white, … pencil or coal: two girls and a flower in a café.

5 5 Saturday 17th July San Francisco, City Syina is on her way to the Italian Quarter. ´... Still one meeting, … advertisment-offer to the Manager of the ‘Giacomo‘ Restaurant and the working-week will be done. Thank God. So sad, that Josh has to go to Vegas for a conference. Last Sunday with him was really nice. He was not offensed when I refused to have Sex. Not at times, not so early. I like his voice but maybe he should change the aftershave, ... not that much a problem. He´s not so good looking in the eyes,… bit shy that man. I won´t have so much time to hang out , think I´ll just stay in the Giacomo´s , after we arranged the advertisment-deal , and have a wine then… let the busy day end.´ She has to laugh, but doesn´t really know why. ´… Maybe I should go to those Tenniscourts on Sunday. Weather Report says: Not too hot, so seems good opportunity. And there´s always a nice bunch of people around.´ At the Giacomo´s she has a talk in the manager´s office about the advertisment-deal and they quickly agree about terms and prices. They make an final appointment for tuesday to talk about, which logos to use and how to arrange some textures. She decides to sit down in that Restaurant for a while. First orders a red wine, but then changes the order to a big black coffee. ´So, nice now here,… I had not so much work this week – compared to June- ... June was Hell,… this is normal altitude, ... got holidays in ten days , perfect .´
