Комментируя проведенные аксиологические исследования, Фолсом отметил тенденцию использованию этого термина для обозначения "какого-либо общего паттерна, ситуации или аспекта поведения человека, общества, культуры или окружающей среды, и/или их взаимосвязи» [35] Folsom, J. K. Changing values in sex and family relations // American Sociological review 2, 1937. P. 717 . То есть, понятие ценности охватывает в той или иной степень весь универсум. Лаутманн провел исследование специфических значений термина «ценность» в приблизительно 4,000 публикаций и нашел в результате не менее 180 различных определений ценности [36] Цит. по: Kmieciak Wertstrukturen und Wertwandel in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Göttingen: Otto Schwartz & Co., 1976. P. 147 . Итак, не существует общего понимания понятия ценности в социальных и культурологических науках. Нет доминирующей или принятой научной парадигмы, которую можно было бы взять за основу.

Даже краткий обзор культурологической, психологической и социологической литературы показывает отсутствие консенсуса в понимании ценностей и ценностных ориентаций.
