Такой интерес к данному договору неудивителен. Во-первых, это один из немногих документов международного права древнего Ближнего Востока, полный текст которого сохранился (причем в двух вариантах на языке сторон – египетском и хеттском). Во-вторых, кроме его объективных преимуществ (договор представляет собой четкое и наиболее полное отражение особенностей международно-правовой практики региона), консервативно настроенные исследователи международного права усмотрели в нем более менее традиционную для международного договора форму, структуру, которая четко отличалась от всех известных прежде международно-правовых документов древнего периода.
