В тексте Договора об учреждении Европейского Сообщества единая европейская денежная единица носит название ЭКЮ. Однако на заседании Европейского Совета в Мадриде в декабре 1995 г. было принято решение, что ее названием будет евро. Именно это название употребляется и на банкнотах и монетах Сообщества, и в нормативных актах Сообщества. В качестве примера приведем Регламент Совета № 974/98/ЕС «О переходе на евро».
