“Why has America often become mired in inconclusive, postwar unconventional conflicts? In a study, historical analysis, critique of military analysts, and memoir as a former Trump administration security advisor, Sebastian Gorka persuasively argues that the absence of willpower, unity, common sense, and political and moral clarity is usually the culprit—not just the inherent dangers of the nuclear age or asymmetrical warfare. An accessible, inspiring, and needed discussion of a classic American dilemma.”
—VICTOR DAVIS HANSON, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and author of
The Second World Wars

He had, in fact, already attended officer candidate school in 1919, and he had been commissioned in the reserves five years before shipping out to Haiti. Because of the reduction in strength of the corps after World War I, however, his officer rank was inactive, and he remained a corporal until returning to the mainland.
To this day, marines on basic training can be heard intoning the cry “Chesty Puller never quit!” when tried to their limit and beyond.

This account is a summary of the full story found in Captain McDaniel’s autobiography (written with the assistance of James L. Johnson), Scars & Stripes: The True Story of One Man’s Courage in Facing Death as a Vietnam POW (Nashville: Broadman Press, 1975). I am honored to have met Captain McDaniel and treasure the signed and dedicated copy of his book that he gave me.
This method is strikingly similar to the one my father suffered in the basement of the communist secret police headquarters in Budapest, although he was bound with wire rather than rope. The human body has been the same anatomically for millennia, thus it is unsurprising that torture methods have evolved little over time.

Column 1, Row 1, stood for the letter A, along the way to 5/5 for Z. In this way the abbreviation for the Viet Cong, VC, could be conveyed by tapping five times, followed by a pause, then one tap, followed by one tap, pause, and then three more.
Scars & Stripes, pp. 15–16.
Incredibly, the North Vietnamese didn’t even confirm that McDaniel was alive until 1970, three years after he had been captured.

Chambers’ given name was Jay Vivian, but he was known as Whittaker, his mother’s maiden name.
The following chronology is based in part on the excellent introductory lecture “Whittaker Chambers’ Witness for the Twenty-first Century” by Dr. Greg Forster, posted by the Acton Institute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNlTigcvcpM.

To this day there are those who insist on Hiss’s innocence, even though the ultra-secret Venona intercepts, since declassified, clearly show that he was not only a secret communist but an agent of Stalin and the Soviets.
C-SPAN still has many video links of the original HUAC footage, starting with this one of Hiss’s denial and Chambers’ response: https://www.c-span.org/video/?79536-1/hiss-chambers-hearing
In 1984, Whittaker Chambers was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ronald Reagan for his contribution to “the century’s epic struggle between freedom and totalitarianism.”
