Пьеса была адаптацией комедии Уильяма Уичерли «Провинциалка». В центре сюжета – молодой повеса, притворившийся импотентом, чтобы получить доступ ко всем замужним дамам. Грубому юмору эпохи Реставрации не было места на сцене XVIII века, и все скабрезности были вычищены из комедии. Вместе с ними ушло и ее очарование.
