Этот тип предубеждений, это искажение сути объективности, – одно из самых распространенных явлений на сегодняшнем Западе. При этом объективность смешивается с тривиальностью и бессмысленностью. По вышеуказанным причинам любая простая и прямолинейная истина о политических институтах или событиях непременно имеет полемические последствия. Она нанесет ущерб интересам отдельных групп. В любом обществе именно господствующим группам приходится больше всего утаивать правду о том, как функционирует общество. Поэтому подлинный анализ часто обречен на то, чтобы иметь критическое звучание, выглядеть скорее как разоблачение, чем как объективное высказывание в обычном смысле использования этого термина. (Это верно и по отношению к коммунистическим странам, если они когда-нибудь придут к тому, чтобы разрешить публикацию сравнительно честных описаний собственного прошлого.) Для всех исследователей человеческого общества сочувствие к жертвам исторического процесса и скептицизм в отношении заявлений победителей обеспечивают достаточную защиту против того, чтобы попасть под влияние господствующей идеологии. Ученый, который пытается быть объективным, нуждается в том, чтобы эти чувства были частью его обычного рабочего инструментария.
