This was my answer (а таким был мне ответ). Had I been the King, I should have thought it encouraging (будь я королем, я бы счел его обнадеживающим):

“Haven’t you enough responsibilities on you for one day, cousin (не слишком много: «не достаточно» ли на вас ответственности для одного дня, кузен)?”

“Do be careful!” she went on. “You don’t – indeed you don’t – keep enough watch on him. You know – ”

“I know,” said I, “that he wants what I’ve got.”

“Yes. Hush!”

Then – and I can’t justify it, for I committed the King far beyond what I had a right to do – I suppose she carried me off my feet – I went on:

“And perhaps also something which I haven’t got yet, but hope to win some day.”

This was my answer. Had I been the King, I should have thought it encouraging:

“Haven’t you enough responsibilities on you for one day, cousin?”

Bang, bang! Blare, blare (грохот /орудий/, рев /труб/; bang – громкий удар, звук выстрела, взрыва )! We were at the Palace (мы были у дворца = мы подъехали к дворцу). Guns were firing and trumpets blowing (стреляли пушки, и гремели трубы; to blow – дуть, веять / о ветре / ; издавать звук / о духовом инструменте /). Rows of lackeys stood waiting (лакеи рядами стояли в ожидании), and, handing the princess up the broad marble staircase, I took formal possession (и, ведя принцессу под руку по широкой мраморной лестнице, я официально вступил во владение; to hand – передавать, вручать; вести за руку; to take possession – стать владельцем ), as a crowned King, of the House of my ancestors (как коронованный король, домом моих предков), and sat down at my own table, with my cousin on my right hand (и сел за свой собственный стол с кузиной, /севшей/ по правую руку от меня), on her other side Black Michael, and on my left his Eminence the Cardinal (с другой ее стороны = рядом с ней /сел/ Черный Михаэль, а слева от меня – его высокопреосвященство кардинал). Behind my chair stood Sapt (позади моего стула встал Сэпт); and at the end of the table, I saw Fritz von Tarlenheim (а в конце стола я увидел Фрица фон Тарленхайма) drain to the bottom his glass of champagne (осушившего до дна свой бокал шампанского) rather sooner than he decently should (пожалуй, быстрее, чем ему следовало бы по законам приличия; decently – прилично, благопристойно ).

I wondered what the King of Ruritania was doing (мне /стало/ интересно, чем /в тот момент/ занимался король Руритании).

Bang, bang! Blare, blare! We were at the Palace. Guns were firing and trumpets blowing. We were in the King’s dressing-room – Fritz von Tarlenheim, Sapt, and I (мы находились в королевской гардеробной – Фриц фон Тарленхайм, Сэпт и я). “What a day for you to remember!” he cried (этот день вам /надолго/ запомнится! – воскликнул он). “Gad, I’d like to be King for twelve hours myself (Боже, я хотел бы сам двенадцать часов побыть королем; Gad / устар., разг. / = God – Бог )! But, Rassendyll, you mustn’t throw your heart too much into the part (но, Рассендил, вы не должны слишком вживаться в эту роль; to throw oneself into smth. – энергично браться за что-л., целиком посвятить себя чему-л.; heart – сердце ). I don’t wonder Black Michael looked blacker than ever (не удивительно, что Черный Михаэль выглядел мрачнее обычного: «мрачнее, чем когда-либо»; black – черный; мрачный, унылый ) – you and the princess had so much to say to one another (вам с принцессой было, что сказать: «вы и принцесса имели так много, что сказать» друг другу).”

“How beautiful she is!” I exclaimed (как она прекрасна! – воскликнул я).

“Never mind the woman,” growled Sapt (эта женщина – не ваша забота, – проворчал Сэпт; never mind – не обращай внимания; не твое дело ). “Are you ready to start (вы готовы ехать)?”
