К июлю 2010 года Агентство США по безопасности продуктов питания и медикаментов (FDA) и Европейское медицинское агентство (EMA) планировали приостановить продажу этого препарата и предупредить о его вреде для здоровья. EMA этого так и не сделало.

Началась борьба за то, чтобы оставить этот препарат на рынке. В качестве доказательства компания-производитель «Смит, Кляйн энд Компании» провела масштабное исследование, результаты которого показали, что у 4500 пациентов, принимавших «Авандию», не было отмечено повышения риска развития сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний. Это исследование называлось Record и началось в 2002–2003 годах, результаты были опубликованы в 2009 году [77] P.D.
