In publishing this story, I owe a great debt to the many authors of books and publications on counter-insurgency. I was most influenced by John A. Nagl (principally his book Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife ), Colonel Thomas X. Hammes ( The Sling and the Stone ), Ian Gardiner ( In the Service of the Sultan , on the Oman war), Bernard Fall ( Street without Joy , on Indochina), and articles by David Kilcullen. On Afghanistan, I drew from, among others, James Fergusson’s A Million Bullets , Sarah Chayes’ The Punishment of Virtue , David Loyn’s Butcher & Bolt, and the series of books on the Soviet-Afghan war edited by Lester W. Grau and whom I would like to thank for his additional advice.
In the main, however, this was the result of more than 230 interviews conducted throughout 2008 in the UK, USA, Afghanistan and Pakistan with members of the British and US armies, a variety of officials and diplomats in the British, American, and Afghan governments, as well as many other experts. In order to tell a coherent story, I have been able to mention only a limited number of individuals and incidents, although there are many others that deserve the telling. As I trimmed down what became a vast manuscript there was a painful process of cutting out mention of many people, units and incidents. But I would like to thank all those who spared the time to help me, all of whom made a difference – whether their experiences are recounted here or not – in shattering at least some of my prejudices and helping to educate this account of some of the complexities of this war. It has been an honour to meet all of you choosing to serve your country in such a harsh environment. Due to the sensitivities of their position, I cannot name many of those in the various corridors of power who assisted me, but, while the mistakes remain my own, I would like to particularly thank the following for their time:
