Once upon a time, in a cosy little shoe town there lived two brothers: Right Bootee and Left Bootee. They were both the most marvellous shade of red.

Their owner, a boy called Dias, took greater care of Right Bootee, and often forgot all about Left Bootee. This made Left Bootee very upset, and he wept to his brother:

“I’m going to run away from our master. He doesn’t take care of me, doesn’t clean me or polish me… Even Aktos the dog and Syrbaz the cat don’t leave me alone: they’re always biting me and gnawing on me. Why me?..

What have I done to deserve it?”

“I can’t take it any more! I’m off!” said Left Bootee and ran outside.

He saw so many pairs of shoes walking down the street, some stepping grandly, others skipping merrily: beautiful Leather Boots and Shoes, Fashionable Ballet Pumps, Sporty Sneakers and Vans… They were all different colours: black, white, orange, blue and purple – of every taste and size.

A particularly beautiful and well-polished pair of Leather Shoes looked down at the shabby and grubby Left Bootee and asked: “Where did you come from? Why are you on your own? Where's your master?” Left Bootee felt awkward. He said nothing, but lowered his eyes and sighed deeply, then carried on walking down the street.
