'Suffered the woman, also, by the storm?'

Several old heads among the assemblage nodded their recognition of the wisdom of this question. The sheriff, however, saw nothing consequential in the inquiry; he answered, with simple directness.

'Indeed, she did, your majesty, and most righteously, as all aver. Her habitation was swept away, and herself and child left shelterless.'

'Methinks the power to do herself so ill a turn was dearly bought. She had been cheated, had she paid but a farthing for it; that she paid her soul, and her child's, argueth that she is mad; if she is mad she knoweth not what she doth, therefore sinneth not.'

The elderly heads nodded recognition of Tom's wisdom once more, and one individual murmured, 'An the king be mad himself, according to report, then it is a madness of a sort that would improve the sanity of some I wot of, if by the gentle providence of God they could but catch it.'

'What age hath the child?' asked Tom.

'Nine years, please your majesty.'

'By the law of England may a child enter into covenant and sell itself, my lord?' asked Tom, turning to a learned judge.

'The law doth not permit a child (закон не дозволяет ребенку) to make or meddle in any weighty matter (совершать или вмешиваться в любой существенный вопрос), good my liege (мой господин), holding that its callow wit (держа то, что = ввиду того, что их незрелый ум; callow — неоперившийся птенец; незрелый, неискушенный, неопытный) unfitteth it to cope with the riper wit (не способен к тому, чтобы состязаться с более зрелым умом; ripe — зрелый) and evil schemings of them (и злоумышленными кознями тех) that are its elders (которые суть их старшие). This astonished Tom (это изумило Тома), and also fired his curiosity to fever heat (а также воспламенило его любопытство до горячечного жара). He said eagerly (он сказал с чувством):

'It is wonderful (это поразительно)! Hath it always this dread effect (имеет ли это всегда такой страшный эффект)?'

'Always, my liege (всегда, мой повелитель) — at least if the woman desire it (по крайней мере, если женщина желает этого), and utter the needful words (и произносит нужные слова), either in her mind or with her tongue (либо в своем уме или своим языком).'

There was a sudden paling of cheeks in the superstitious assemblage (произошло внезапное побледнение щек в суеверном собрании = у всех щеки побледнели), and a general, though unexpressed, desire (и всеобщее, хоть и невысказанное, желание) to get out of the place (выбраться из этого места) — all of which was lost upon Tom (что целиком: «все из чего» было зря потрачено на Тома; to lose — терять), who was dead to everything (который был мертв = безразличен ко всему) but the proposed cataclysm (кроме ожидаемого катаклизма). 'O, my lord the king, I have it not (о, милорд король, я не имею ее = этой силы) — I have been falsely accused (я была ошибочно обвинена).'

'Thy fears stay thee (твои страхи удерживают тебя). Be of good heart (будь так добра: «будь доброго сердца»), thou shalt suffer no harm (ты не испытаешь вреда). Make a storm (сделай бурю) — it mattereth not how small a one (не имеет значения, насколько маленькую) — I require naught great or harmful (я не требую ничего великого или вредоносного), but indeed prefer the opposite (но в действительности предпочитаю противное) — do this (сделай это) and thy life is spared (и твоя жизнь пощажена) — thou shalt go out free (ты выйдешь наружу свободная), with thy child (с твоим ребенком), bearing the king's pardon (неся = получив прощение короля), and safe from hurt or malice from any in the realm (и защищенная от вреда либо злобы от любого в королевстве).'
