'Admit him, admit him (допустите его, допустите его)!' exclaimed the king eagerly (воскликнул король нетерпеливо).

The Lord Chancellor entered (лорд-канцлер вошел), and knelt by the king's couch (и преклонил колени у ложа короля; to kneel — становиться на колени), saying (говоря):

'I have given order (я отдал приказ), and, according to the king's command (и, согласно приказанию короля), the peers of the realm (пэры королевства), in their robes (в своих одеяниях), do now stand at the bar of the House (стоят сейчас у ворот Суда), where, having confirmed the Duke of Norfolk's doom (где, подтвердив приговор герцога Норфолкского), they humbly wait his majesty's further pleasure in the matter (они смиренно ожидают дальнейших пожеланий Его Величества по этому вопросу; matter — дело).'

The king's face lit up with a fierce joy (лицо короля загорелось свирепой радостью; to light up — загореться). Said he (сказал он):

'Lift me up (поднимите меня)! In mine own person (лично: «в моей собственной персоне») will I go before my Parliament (предстану я перед моим Парламентом), and with mine own hand (и моей собственной рукой) will I seal the warrant (скреплю я печатью документ, предписание) that rids me of — (который избавляет меня от)'

His voice failed (его голос изменил ему); an ashen pallor (пепельная бледность) swept the flush from his cheeks (стерла румянец с его щек; to sweep); and the attendants eased him back (и слуги уложили его обратно; to ease — устраиваться, осторожно опускать) upon his pillows (на его подушки), and hurriedly assisted him with restoratives (и поспешно помогли ему укрепляющими снадобьями). Presently he said sorrowfully (вскоре он сказал с грустью):

'Alack (увы; устар. вместо alas), how have I longed for this sweet hour (как я ждал этого сладкого часа; to long for — страстно желать)! and lo (и взгляните; устар.), too late it cometh (слишком поздно он приходит), and I am robbed of this so coveted chance (и я лишен этого желанного шанса; to rob — грабить). But speed ye, speed ye (но поторопитесь; ye — вы)! let others do this happy office sith 'tis denied to me (пусть другие выполнят эту счастливую работу, раз она отказана мне; sith — устар. вместо since; to deny — отрицать, отказывать). I put my Great Seal in commission (я даю мою Великую Печать комиссии): choose thou the lords that shall compose it (выбери ты лордов, которые составят составят его /приказ/), and get ye to your work (и принимайся за работу). 'According to the king's command, so shall it be (согласно приказанию короля, так и будет). Will't please your majesty to order that the Seal be now restored to me (будет ли так любезно ваше величество приказать, чтобы Печать была сейчас возвращена мне), so that I may forth upon the business (чтобы я мог приступить к делу)?'

'The Seal (Печать)! Who keepeth the Seal but thou? (кто хранит Печать, кроме тебя)'

'Please your majesty (пожалуйте, ваше величество), you did take it from me two days since (вы взяли ее у меня уже два дня как), saying it should no more do its office (говоря, что она не должна больше выполнять свою работу) till your own royal hand should use it upon the Duke of Norfolk's warrant (пока ваша собственная королевская рука не использует ее по решению Герцога Норфолка).'

'Why, so in sooth I did (как же, так в действительности я сделал); I do remember it (я действительно помню это)... What did I with it (что сделал я с ней)!.. I am very feeble (я очень слаб)... The king dropped into inarticulate mumblings (король погрузился в невнятное бормотание; to drop — падать, капать), shaking his gray head weakly (тряся своей седой головой слабо; gray (амер.) = grey (брит.) — серый; седой) from time to time (время от времени), and gropingly trying to recollect (и силясь вспомнить; to grope — ощупывать; gropingly — ощупью; to try — пытаться) what he had done with the Seal (что он сделал с Печатью). At last my Lord Hertford ventured to kneel and offer information (наконец милорд Хартфорд отважился встать на колени и дать сведения; to offer — предлагать, дарить, приносить) —

confirm [kən`fə:m], restorative [rı`stOrətıv], inarticulate [ına:`tıkjələt], business [`bıznıs]

ABOUT five o'clock Henry VIII awoke out of an unrefreshing nap, and muttered to himself, 'Troublous dreams, troublous dreams! Mine end is now at hand; so say these warnings, and my failing pulses do confirm it.' Presently a wicked light flamed up in his eye, and he muttered, 'Yet will not I die till he go before.'

His attendants perceiving that he was awake, one of them asked his pleasure concerning the Lord Chancellor, who was waiting without.
