Trout fishing. No other sport, indeed, no other type of fishing itself, is shrouded with such mystique. The art of trout fishing (as any good angler calls it) has been held up to nearly mythological proportions.

When one trout fisherman discovers another, an instant fraternity forms, a bonding of unequaled proportions — and rightly so. But if you go to grasp the reasons for this bonding and immediate recognition, you’d find that they are rather elusive.

Perhaps the fraternal society forms instantly because every trout fisherman recalls the tranquil setting that surrounds trout fishing. If you’ve ever gone, think back to the serene, fine quality of water that is at the core of a successful trip.

Or perhaps it’s the vivid colors of the fish itself. Each species of trout is distinctive in its own unique way (we talk about this in more detail in Chapter 1).

However some anglers claim the bonding comes from knowing what other fishermen find hard to imagine: the sheer seemingly unpredictability of these fish (and throughout this book, I try to address the fish’s amazing abilities so you can predict their behavior with some confidence).

Whatever the reason, I’m glad you’re considering joining the select group who find trout fishing exciting yet serene at the same time. This paradox of the fishing world welcomes you.

But needless to say, you don’t want to jump into the (cold) waters of trout fishing without some type of life vest on. Consider this book your life vest.

I’ve written it with the novice angler in mind, but that doesn’t mean that the veteran trout fisherman won’t find some juicy tips or some knowledge long thought lost, or even a new flash of insight on these pages.

Sometimes it takes viewing trout fishing from a different perspective to allow us to grasp something new.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS BOOK

You’ll probably want to read the entire book through once. This is especially so if you know little about trout fishing to start. And don’t worry, I don’t believe anything here is written in a way to overwhelm you.

If you have an interest in fishing, you should find this pretty delightful reading.

I’ve written five basic chapters. I like to think of it as “everything you want to know about trout fishing, but the professionals refuse to tell you”.

Starting with the first chapter — the basic types of trout — and right on to the last chapter — tips on fishing for these sly, shrewd creatures — you’re sure to find information that will undoubtedly make your next fishing trip successful

In between these two chapters, I’ve included a section on spinner fishing, fly fishing and how to read a stream. I’ve covered all the basics and then some. It’s all yours.

After you’ve finished reviewing the entire book, you may want to revisit certain chapters especially the one on fly fishing. But, you’ll know right away which interest you the most — or the ones you need to glean more knowledge and tips from.

After that, I’m sure there will be no stopping you. You’ll be counting the days until the next time you can step out and actually experiment with what you’ve read in this book. And rightly so. It is an exciting avocation.

Part of the excitement, as you’ll notice on your next fishing trip, is the sheer shrewdness of trout. They are indeed a worthy opponent of any angler.

Another part of the satisfaction is the camaraderie that bonds anglers. And a large portion of the anticipation is the communing with nature, enjoying a truly day unlike any other!
