Breakfast was served during which Paul revealed that he was a graphic designer who ran his own company. Fiona was impressed. By the time he was finishing a tiny bowl of grapefruit segments with a cherry on top she was yearning to impress him in return.

‘Do you like swimming(вы любите плавать) ?’ she asked impulsively(импульсивно спросила она).

‘A little(немного) ,’ he replied with moderate enthusiasm(ответил он с умеренным энтузиазмом).

‘I am a good swimmer(я хороший пловец) ,’ Fiona prattled on(щебетала дальше Фиона) . ‘Keeps me in shape(/плавание/ держит меня в форме) . Because you’ll never guess what I do for a living(потому что вы никогда не догадаетесь, чем я зарабатываю себе на жизнь) .’

‘Do you like swimming?’ she asked impulsively.

‘A little,’ he replied with moderate enthusiasm.

‘I am a good swimmer,’ Fiona prattled on. ‘Keeps me in shape. Because you’ll never guess what I do for a living.’

‘Surprise me(удивите меня) ,’ he suggested(предложил он).

‘I skate,’ she told him proudly. ‘I’m something of a whiz on ice. I do exhibitions, solo and with my team. And I teach it too.’

‘Sounds great(звучит здорово) …’

‘Needless to say I’m always jogging long distances(не говоря уже о том, что я все время бегаю трусцой на длинные дистанции) to keep my legs strong(чтобы мои ноги были сильными: «чтобы держать мои ноги сильными») ,’ continued Fiona(продолжала Фиона) . ‘Gavin Morgan(Гэвин Морган) – the chap I was going to marry(парень, за которого я собиралась замуж) – he was a keen jogger(он был заядлым бегуном трусцой) . That’s how we met(так мы и познакомились; to meet ) . And you, Paul(а вы, Пол) … You seem a sporty type yourself(вы сами кажетесь спортивным человеком; type – тип ) . You’ve got a good body(у вас хорошее тело) .’

‘Sounds great…’

‘Needless to say I’m always jogging long distances to keep my legs strong,’ continued Fiona. ‘Gavin Morgan – the chap I was going to marry – he was a keen jogger. That’s how we met. And you, Paul… You seem a sporty type yourself. You’ve got a good body.’

‘I do believe we’ve begun our descent into Heathrow(судя по всему, мы начинаем спуск к Хитроу) ,’ he commented(заметил он) , whereupon to her dismay he pulled out a book(после чего к ее ужасу он достал книгу) and buried himself in it(и по уши ушел в нее: «закопал себя в ней») . He’d shut her out without any warning(он отгородился от нее без всякого предупреждения) , and it felt terrible(и это было ужасное чувство; to feel – чувствовать, ощущать ) . There had been something so solid and trustworthy about him(в нем было что-то такое надежное и заслуживающее доверия) and then(а потом) …

As the stewardess collected their breakfast trays(когда стюардесса забирала их подносы от завтрака) Fiona glanced out to where Paul had been looking(Фиона взглянула, куда смотрел Пол) . Hundreds of little lights gleamed up from Heathrow(сотни маленьких огоньков сверкали в Хитроу) through the dull, rain streaked sky(сквозь мрачное, залитое дождем небо) . Of course(конечно) ! She knew the answer(она знала ответ; to know ) . Someone was down there waiting for him(кто-то был там внизу, ждущий его) ! At last he had remembered(наконец-то он вспомнил) . What a fool she’d made of herself(какую дуру она из себя сделала) . For heaven’s sake(ради всего святого) , he’d only been trying to cheer her up(он просто пытался ее взбодрить)!
